For the first time since World War II, star-gazers across the world can look forward to seeing a rare Blue Moon this Halloween.
Weather permitting, of course! But if the stars – and clouds – align, it seems that after enduring several periods of Mercury in Retrograde this year, the cosmic havoc isn’t over. This weekend will see the appearance of Blue Moon on the eve of Halloween for the first time in 76 years.
The last time a Blue Moon appeared simultaneously across the world was 1944. So don’t forget to check your horoscope and keep an eye out for this fascinating occurrence.
What is a Blue Moon?
It may be impressive, but don’t be fooled into thinking it will be glimmering blue. Sadly, the name has nothing to do with this rare moon’s colour.
It may sound slightly ghoulish, but in fact Blue Moon is just the second full moon to appear in a month.
Full moons are separated by almost 29.5 days. And with most months being 30 or 31 days long, there is time for two to appear in a single month. However, this is still a rare sight to behold.
On average Blue Moons can be glimpsed in the night sky only every two and a half years. The last sighting was on March 31, 2018.
What is a Hunter’s Blue Moon?
Some also refer to this unusual phenomenon as the ‘Hunter’s Blue Moon’. This is supposedly because Native American tribes would use the moon around this time of year to help them gather supplies to last the winter.
And if that wasn’t enough, this Halloween Blue Moon is also technically a Micromoon. It is approaching the point furthest from the earth on it’s orbit. This means that it will appear approximately 14% smaller than the Supermoon from March this year.
Rarest of the Rare
The Farmers’ Almanac has confirmed this occurrence will not happen again until 2039. And with October 2020 also seeing the appearance of a Harvest Moon, it seems this is the year for all things astrological.
So when you’re cosy at home this Halloween, why not try and catch a glimpse of this extraordinary event?
